The 2016 VGA Summer Arts Workshop Series

Produced by the Barn Arts Collective & Presented at The Legion

This summer, the Village Green Arts Association is offering arts workshops for island residents and visitors of all ages as part of its core mission of arts education for the community. The Arts Workshop Series will give the public an opportunity to learn and practice skills and concepts related to the performing arts from professional artists in residence in June and July with the Barn Arts Collective.

Participants at each event in the series will work with artists from New York City, who will be on the island developing a new piece of performance at the Barn. The interactive workshop sessions will foster growth, exploration and collaboration for participants working together on a variety of performance topics.

Participation is by donation and each workshop will last between an hour and an hour and a half. Proceeds from the series will benefit the VGA and the visiting teaching artists.

The tentative schedule for the series is below. Please contact Andrew Simon at andrew.m.simon@gmail.com for more information.

VGA Summer Workshop Series Schedule of Events

Wednesday, June 22, 6pm – Movement and Performance – Eric Mercado

This workshop gives an overview of physical techniques used in creating a character and teaches ways of engaging a story through movement. We will do a warm-up and several exercises, culminating in a physical retelling of a well-known story. Please come prepared to move and wear comfortable clothing.

Thursday, June 23, 6pm – The Art of Drag and Queer Nightlife Performance – Bailey Williams *Ages 12 and up

This workshop is fun!!! Flashing memories of locker room secrets. Late-night almost muted episodes of Golden Girls. Hilary Duff’s music video for ‘Come Clean.’ Have you ever danced in front of a mirror wearing too much makeup? Have any cute skeletons in your closet that need to be set free? Come with a song in mind that was a guilty pleasure from a formative time in your life. Bring a notebook and pen.

Thursday, June 30, 5pm –Storytelling for the Theatre - Matt Minnicino

Tuesday, July 12, 6pm — Shakespeare Sleuths — FORGE

Everything you need to know about Shakespeare can be found in the language – if you know how to look for it! By exploring excerpts from the canon through physical and vocal exercises, FORGE’s Shakespeare Sleuths workshop encourages participating “detectives” to follow the metrical and rhetorical clues in the text, equipping them with the skills to “solve” Shakespeare plays and understand the language their own.

Wednesday, July 20, 7pm – Collaborative Performance - Rebecca Hirota

No scripts needed here! This workshop gives an introduction to the techniques used in creating theatre from scratch. You will learn how to create plays through collective thinking, collaboration and movement. Pulling from stories in our own lives as well as myths and tales of the past we will create a brand new piece of theatre unique to the workshop’s participants. Be ready to move and to play!

Thursday, July 21, 5pm – Writing and Performing as Yourself (Docu-Theatre) – The NY Neo-Futurists

This workshop is an introduction to the NY Neo-Futurists' aesthetic of creating theatre without characters or artifice—"you are who you are, you are where you are, you are doing what you're doing, and the time is now." Students will be lead through a warm-up and several performance and writing exercises that will culminate in the creation of their own 2-minute play, which they will then have the opportunity to perform. Students are asked to bring their unique brand of brilliance and maybe something to write on and with.

Amy & The Engine

When: Sunday, July 10, 2016 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Where: The Legion - Municipal Parking Lot and Main Street, Southwest Harbor, Maine 04679
BUY TICKETS

The Boston-based pop rock band has only been around for a little over a year – and has already earned praise from some of Boston’s most beloved music curators and has even garnered national press. From nominations for the New England Music Award’s Best Songwriter, Best New Act, Pop Act of the Year, and The New England Deli’s Pop Act of the Year, to opening for national artists Vance Joy, Guster, Kacey Musgraves, and Racehl Platten, the question is who drives the Engine?

The answer: “the new it girl.” Scholastic songstress Amy Allen from South Portland, Maine writes “pop gold” songwriting you can rock out to.

A true 90s child, Allen’s vocal delivery feels like a conversation between lovers and friends, navigating the waters of complicated emotions filled with layers of regret, fear and worry. How do you find a lasting connection with someone? What happens when you hold onto love for too long? The music is brooding and truthful, yet still unquestionably pop, nodding to some of Allen's earliest influencers including Everclear, The Ronettes, and the Beach Boys among others. Combining her love for lyrics and her knack for pop melodies, Allen's irresistible songs hone into self-awareness and feelings of doubt that every young woman and man feels as they fly through their 20s. The result is retro pop music you can feel. Nostalgic, sun-shining 70s acoustic guitar, 50s and 60s girl-group influenced swoon-worthy harmonies, surf-rock guitar tones and soulful solos, Amy & The Engine’s rocket-fueled classic rock sound perfectly marries sun and sadness. All-ages show. Cash bar available with valid photo ID 21+ General Admission - $15

Chris Ross & The North

When: Wed, July 13th at 7PM
Where:The Legion, Southwest Harbor
BUY TICKETS

The world Ross describes in his songs is one that’s probably very familiar to the devoted fanbase he’s developed. Does hard-drinking, hard-working, honest, wry, and, hidden behind a tough exterior, a well of intelligence and emotional depth come to mind? Add The North and the room is on fire. Any questions? All ages show. Cash bar with valid photo ID 21+ $15 General Admission

Howie Day and special guest Connor Zwetsch

When: Fri, Aug 12 at 7:30PM
Where: The Legion, Southwest Harbor, Maine 04679
BUY TICKETS

Howie Day’s emotionally resonant lyrics and inventive melodies have earned him both critical praise and a legion of devoted fans. He is known for his energetic, heartfelt shows, where he connects with audiences through the strength of his songwriting and his quirky sense of humor. Day’s warm tenor voice “soars into fluttering, high registers, but also grates with real, pleading grit,” as one critic put it. After sales of over a million albums and two Top 10 hits, Day is back on the road showcasing old favorites, as well as new material from his upcoming studio release. A native of Bangor, Maine, Day began playing piano at age five and guitar at age 12. By 15, he was writing his own songs and performing across New England. Shortly after graduating high school, Day became a fixture at college coffeehouses across the U.S. He wrote, financed and released his first effort, Australia, which was named Best Debut Album at the 2001 Boston Music Awards. The Boston Globe called Day “gorgeously seasoned, far beyond his years” with “a brave, beautiful singing voice.” During his relentless touring schedule, Day began experimenting with effects pedals and loop-sampling techniques as he performed, layering live percussion with vocal harmonies and guitar parts to become a veritable one-man band. He went on to sell over 30,000 copies of Australia as he navigated the independent music scene and continued to hone his craft. After signing with Epic Records, Day released his major-label debut, Stop All The World Now, and hit the road to support it. The constant promotion paid off: Stop was certified gold in the U.S. and spawned two Top 10 radio hits: “She Says” and the platinum single “Collide.” Connon Zwetch emanates a contagious kind of comfort on stage, letting audiences sit back and sink into her warm, sultry vibes. Her music is the coziness of empathy met with bare honesty and confessional lyrics; a view of ventured mountains seen from a back porch rocking chair. She invites her listeners to join in, stand up, sing along, and scream aloud. Her debut EP, “ What Comes After”, recorded at Bear Creek Studio with producer Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Vance Joy), is an autobiographical collection that will resonate with all who are navigating love, loss, and the search for life’s silver linings. It’s a celebration of the big and small things: water wasted, bridges burned, gas station wine, and whatever it is that comes after. Show starts at 7:30pm. There is a cash bar for 21+. Photo ID required. Tickets- $20
